EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Stitching together face masks is something new to the business, Alterations and Custom Sewing, that Cindy Weir started in 1981. “We never did it before the coronavirus,” she said while working in her shop at 1727 W. Jesse James Road in the Y Shopping Center. “Most of my business is alterations.” Before the coronavirus, COVID-19, struck the area, Weir said the business focused on sewing clothes and doing work with letter jackets, tuxedo rentals, and selling police uniforms, proms and weddings. Interest in those services declined about 95% initially due to the virus closing schools and businesses, and the demand for alterations has been slow to recover. “It’s down about 50% from last year,” Weir said. “It’s still way down.” But when the door closed on most of her regular work, another opened.
