JEFFERSON CITY – The Missouri Supreme Court overruled Gov. Mike Parson and the majority of Republicans in the General Assembly who agreed to thwart the will of Missouri voters by refusing to fund Medicare expansion. Fifty-three percent of voters statewide in August 2020 approved a ballot amendment to the Missouri Constitution to increase eligibility for Missouri HealthNet coverage, including adults ages 19-64 who are at or below 138% of the federal poverty level. “It is estimated this new category could include more than 275,000 Missourians,” court information stated. Those most affected people, including in Ray and Clay counties, fall just above the present poverty line, including the working poor. Republican lawmakers refused to back the public’s vote, citing lack of a funding mechanism. The constitutionally required change should have gone into effect July 1, but Parson, also a Republican, said he would not enforce the new amendment because lawmakers did not set aside needed…
