THE MONEY PIT: Sheriff says patchwork not enough to make Ray County Jail right

RICHMOND – “It’s a money pit.” Western Commissioner Gary Wilhite described the Ray County Jail by referencing a 1986 comedy film about a couple pouring money into a “fixerupper” that never seems to get fixed. Eastern Commissioner Dave Powell said work is ongoing to make the most out of the shed-like jail. “They’re making some improvements on the office side, and they’ve done some stuff on the jail itself,” Powell said. Volunteers help with improvements, but materials cost money, Powell said. “It’s a never-ending job,” he said. Facility issues include “water lines (that) run through the ceiling,” Wilhite said. A busted ceiling pipe can send water into ceiling tiles and lights, down on computers and other items under ceilings, into walls and onto floors. “Our new sheriff had to put heaters up in there around those pipes so that they would not freeze and bust,” Wilhite said.
