Officer Stott in “good spirits” after officer-involved shooting
Excelsior Springs Police Officer Andrew Stott is on the road to recovery after being shot on Oct. 1.
Stott is said to be in “good spirits and has already made comments about wanting to get back to work,” according to the ESPD official Facebook page.
The community has supported Stott and his family by starting a Go Fund Me page. According to the page, Stott has had arterial repair to his right shoulder and has had two surgeries on his left hand. More than $5,000 has been raised.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles 3917 Social Committee also has chosen to help the Stott family by holding a “Back the Blue” event. The committee will offer a Philly steak and cheese with French fries and desert at $8 per meal from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday. All tips and proceeds from this event will go to Stott. A raffle also will take place.
Stott was involved in a shooting near the intersection of Kearney and Crown Hill roads. The incident left Stott with non-life-threatening injuries and the suspect, 65-year-old Carl J. Carrel, dead. Stott and another officer located Carrel, who had a warrant for assaulting a law enforcement officer, at Price Chopper. The officers, in separate patrol cars, attempted to stop Carrel, but he was able to drive out of the parking lot.
The officers managed to box in Carrel with their cruisers when he opened fired on Stott, whose cruiser was in front of him, striking his hand and shoulder. The officer behind Carrel opened fire, striking Carrel in the back of the head. Both Stott and Carrel were transported to an area hospital, but Carrel died shortly after.
