One woman’s tale of overcoming all obstacles

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) discussed drug overdose and prevention through one woman’s personal history at a recent Narcan training session held at the Excelsior Springs Community Center. SAMHSA, an agency within the United States Department of Health and Human Services, aids in leading public health efforts, including educating people on topics such as overdose, addiction and prevention. Mirna Herrera, regional behavioral health, and Jennifer Wolfe-Brown, certified peer specialist, explained their priority is preventing substance use and the risks of succumbing to an overdose. Brown used her life as an example to describe the dangers and risks associated with drug use through her witnessing the death of a loved one. Brown said she grew up in a suburban area with her mother after her father succumbed to alcohol addiction and was stabbed in the head during a bar robbery.
