Operation Small Fry builds trust with kids
The quiet cast of a fishing line may not sound like law enforcement work, but for the Clay County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), it is a cornerstone of building trust, especially with the next generation.The sheriff’s office recently revived a treasured tradition for the second year in a row with Operation Small Fry, a youth outreach event designed to create positive, one-on-one experiences between deputies and school-aged children. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the County Pond in Kearney was alive with laughter, bait buckets and the patient guidance of law enforcement personnel, as 25 students partnered with deputies and staff to learn how to fish and connect with uniformed mentors.“Building relationships with the community and especially kids is so important as they are our future,” said CCSO Community Interaction Sergeant Megan Blackburn, who coordinated the event. “So, what better way than to bring back something that means so much to the sheriff’s ...
