Oxford House sparks emotional testimony, local resistance
Supporters of a women’s recovery home pleaded for compassion while concerned neighbors questioned transparency, safety and property values during a recent public hearing about Oxford House’s request for zoning accommodations.The hearing, held at the Excelsior Springs Community Center, centered on a request submitted by Oxford House, Inc. for 21 Dawn Avenue. The organization is seeking a reasonable accommodation under the Federal Fair Housing Act to allow up to eight unrelated adults, along with their children, to reside in the single-family residential district.“We want to be good neighbors. We want to help this community. We want to provide a safe place for mothers and also women in recovery,” said Oxford House Regional Manager Daniel Hahn, who is overseeing the home.The home currently houses six adult women and two children.
