Plans to redraw House, Senate maps underway
JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri is set for redistricting – lines being redrawn for U.S. House and Missouri House and Senate seats.
How border lines are drawn can determine whether a Republican or a Democrat is elected in certain areas. U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II’s district, oddly elongated after the last census, is far from compact. On the St. Louis side, U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan complained about politics being played with redrawing his district, which he then lost to a Republican.
The Missouri House and Senate Independent Bipartisan Citizens commissions announced that by a unanimous vote Marc Ellinger had been elected chair and Susan Montee vice chair of the Senate Commission, and Jerry Hunter had been elected chair and Keena Smith vice chair of the House Commission. A public hearing on redistricting is set for Oct. 19 in Kansas City, but the time and specific site have not been released.
