Rayville woman facing 17 felonies, child abuse

A Rayville woman recently entered a not-guilty plea for numerous felony child abuse charges. Courtney M. Johnson, 34, is facing 17 felony charges including - 14 counts of abuse or neglect of a child; two counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child, creating substantial risk; and tampering with a witness in a felony prosecution. Eighth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Kevin L. Walden provided Johnson with a copy of the charge information and accepted her plea of not guilty. According to the probable cause statement, Ray County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) Detective Amy Sisson received a call from Children’s Division Investigator Leslie Schottell on March 31, 2021, about a child abuse hotline call. “According to the hotline report, the juvenile sent text messages to another student stating that his parents were keeping him home from school to do yard work,” the statement reads. “The hotline went on to state that the juvenile advised the other student that his mom, Courtney…
