Rec marijuana tax proposal set for April vote
Recreational marijuana users who frequent the Kansas City Cannabis dispensary in Excelsior Springs, or any future dispensaries in town, may soon have to pay a city sales tax.
The Excelsior Springs City Council unanimously approved an ordinance Tuesday night — which would be placed on the ballot for voter approval —to enact a 3-percent sales tax “on all tangible personal property retail sales of adult use non-medical marijuana” purchased in town. Per the ordinance, the proposed tax was to be filed as Question 1 by 5 p.m. Jan. 24 in Clay and Ray counties, the two counties where Excelsior Springs is located, in order to appear on the April 4 ballot.
The proposed tax is permitted under Amendment 3, the state constitutional amendment approved in November by Missourians to legalize recreational marijuana, City Manager Molly McGovern stated in a Jan. 11 memo to city leaders and reiterated shortly before the vote.
