Excelsior Springs has entered a new chapter in city leadership following the City Council’s selection of a new mayor.Council members elected Sonya Morgan to serve as mayor in a 4-1 vote over Mark Spohn, then unanimously selected Reggie St. John as mayor pro-tem.During the recent meeting, members moved into the annual process of selecting the city’s mayor and mayor pro tem.Nominations for mayor were opened and Councilman John McGovern nominated Morgan, while Stephen Spear nominated Spohn, who had been serving as mayor.“Congratulations, Sonya,” said Spohn.The leadership vote followed the council’s approval of the certified results of the April 7 municipal election and the formal seating of its newly elected members.An ordinance acknowledging the election results declared St. John and Morgan to fill the two available council seats.
