State audit in Clay ‘ongoing’

LIBERTY – When the Clay County Commission portion of the state audit will be complete remains unclear. State Auditor Nicole Galloway’s staff finished audits of five county offices, including sheriff, but the commission portion – where the most controversy has been centered – remains incomplete. Over Presiding Commissioner Jerry Nolte’s objections, former Commissioners Luann Ridgeway and Gene Owen sued to stop the commission audit based on privacy concerns. Galloway’s office overcame most concerns in court, with the last ruling coming Dec. 29 from the Western District Court of Appeals. “Today’s ruling is another win for Clay County citizens who simply want accountability and transparency from their government. Despite ongoing attempts to obstruct this office’s efforts to get answers for taxpayers, work on the audit of Clay County will continue,” Galloway stated at the time.
