Traditional views hold on in future planning

Mayor Mark Spohn has a very specific long-standing Christmas morning tradition. Spohn and his wife always spend Christmas with their children and grandchildren, and Christmas morning always starts the same way. “The first thing we do on Christmas morning before we get up and tear into gifts is sit down and have coffee and hot cocoa and read Luke Chapter 2,” he said. “The story of the birth of Christ.” He noted his family has always emphasized the holiday season by explaining to his children that Santa Claus is fun, but the real reason for Christmas is the birth of Christ and what that truly means to their family. “We’ll have fun with Santa Claus, and we will explain to our children the real history of St. Nicholas,” he said. “St. Nicholas gave gifts as a bishop in the church, and it morphed in the 1930s into the iconic Santa Claus.” While he enjoys spending time with his family and sharing the meaning of Christmas with loved ones, as a city leader, Spohn also believes the…
