REGAN ROETucked away near Corum Road southwest of Excelsior Springs, the Price-Slaughter Cemetery stands as a testament to the area’s rich history and the legacies of the prominent families interred within its stone walls. Established in the mid-19th century, the cemetery serves as the final resting place for the Price and Slaughter families, two well-known names in Clay County’s past.Richard Montgomery Gano, often referred to as “RMG,” was laid to rest in Price-Slaughter Cemetery in 1856 after being accidentally shot and killed by his pro-slavery comrade J.M. Sullivan during a skirmish with Kansas free-staters. These “free-staters” opposed the expansion of slavery in Kansas Territory during the tumultuous “Bleeding Kansas” period of the 1850s.
