Youth Fishing Day draws 37 participants

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS — On June 11, Powell Lake was surrounded by 37 young anglers getting hooked on fishing. Youngsters were accompanied by their families for a morning of free fishing, hosted by the Excelsior Springs Parks and Recreation Department. “We always host this event on Missouri Department of Conservation’s Free Fishing Weekend. It allows children ages 15 and under (to) try fishing free without a license,” said Janet More-head, administrative assistant. The catch-and-release activity helped families and youth learn about fish, fish habitats and fishing techniques. Participants received activity bags full of fishing information, free worms for bait and an opportunity to win prizes, such as tackle boxes and fishing poles.
