Carolyn Birkeness

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Carolyn A. Birkeness, a cherished mother, sister and friend, who left us on April 3, 2025, at age 79. Born Aug. 23, 1945, in Excelsior Springs, Carolyn spent her final years in Riverside, Calif., where her light continued to shine brightly in the lives of those she touched. Carolyn’s journey was marked by a steadfast commitment to education and healing. She earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Education degrees, dedicating 18 fruitful years to teaching, where her caring and playful nature inspired countless young minds. Driven by a passion for holistic health, she further pursued a Doctor of Chiropractic degree, bringing comfort and relief to many through her practice.

Her life was a testament to the values she held dear — compassion, friendliness and a zest for life that was fun and spirited. She lived with an open heart, always ready to offer a kind word or a helping hand. She adored animals tremendously, including her sweet kitties over many decades.

Carolyn leaves behind her beloved daughter and son-in-law, Alyson and Joao Pena; and her devoted sister, Julie Adams. They, along with all who knew her, will forever cherish the memories of her love and laughter.

To honor Carolyn’s remarkable life, a celebration of life will be held 1-4 p.m. July 19 at the Ventana Gourmet Grill in Excelsior Springs. We invite all who were touched by her kindness and spirit to join us in remembering a life well-lived.

In closing, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone whose lives Carolyn enriched. She deeply loved you all, and her legacy will continue through the many lives she inspired.

Please, donate in her honor to Act 2 Rescue in Riverside, Calif. (link below), where her beloved cat Bart was rescued: https://www.paypal.com/us/fundraiser/ charity/4557316.
