Dorothy (Dotty) Reed Stockdell, Lee’s Summit, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2023, two weeks before her 94th birthday.

Born Jan. 27, 1929, in Harrisburg, Penn., Dotty was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, R.E. (Bob) Stockdell.

Born and raised in the Pennsylvania state capital of Harrisburg, Dotty had a lifelong fascination with state capitals and visited 46 capitals over the years, mainly between 1987 and 2010, when she and Bob traveled all over the United States after his retirement from the Missouri Highway Patrol. They had a good retirement, wintering in south Texas near the Mexican border and spending spring and fall camping in their fifth-wheel on Lake Taneycomo for some 20 years. She was a pretty good trout fisherwoman, often outfishing her husband. They always bet 25 cents on who caught the first and who caught the biggest. She accumulated a lot of quarters over the years.

Dotty was a voracious reader of primarily fiction, but with a real interest in Abe Lincoln. She owned nearly every book ever written about the 16th president. She identified with his reading at night by candlelight, as she took a flashlight to bed with her every night growing up so she could read in bed.

A monthly book club meeting at Lee’s Summit Public Library was one of her favorite activities. She was a quilter and also knitted stocking caps and scarves for various charities, including her church.

She regularly attended the First Presbyterian Church on Sundays and went to a weekly Bible study every Friday.

She is survived by three sons, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. They include Robert (Bob) Stockdell and Linda of Independence; Richard (Rick) Stockdell and Beth of Fayetteville, Ark.; and James (Jim) Stockdell of Excelsior Springs. Grandchildren are Brian Stockdale, Jennifer and great-granddaughter Anna Rose of Blue Springs; Taylor Miller and Martin of Lakewood, Colo.; and Christa and Luke Stockdale (not a misprint) and great-granddaughter Bonnie Reed of Nashville, Tenn.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Langsford Funeral Home, Lee’s Summit.
