Paul Schwebach was born July 10, 1938, to Theodore and Nathalia (Steichen) Schwebach in rural Alton. He was raised and educated in the Alton area.

He married Bernice Klein on April 15, 1961, in Hospers, Iowa. They lived in the Hospers and Alton areas until 1965, when they moved to Waterloo, Iowa, where they raised their family.

In 1986, Paul took a job in Plymouth, Minn., building houses. He retired in 2003. During those years, Paul was a proud member of the carpenters and roofers unions.

In 2016, Paul and Bernice moved to Excelsior Springs. Over the years, Paul and Bernice enjoyed bowling in a couples league, camping and fishing. They also enjoyed traveling and were fortunate enough to visit places like England, Germany and France. Some of their favorite travels were visiting their grandchildren.

Paul was a man who loved to share stories and laughter, always quick with a joke. He was a devoted and loving father and grandfather, finding immense joy in spending time with family and friends.

He was always ready to lend a hand with any project; and no matter the circumstances, if he was invited to a gathering, he’d find a way to be there. His presence always brightened the room.

Survivors include his wife Bernice of Excelsior Springs; and their children, Kurt Schwebach of Reno, Nev., Brenda (Randy) Thomas of Des Moines, Iowa, Shelly (Patrick) Quick Bear of Colorado Springs, Colo., Douglas Schwebach of Waterloo and Wanda (Mark) Schmerbach of Lawson. Other survivors include his grandchildren, Lindsey, Brandon, Miranda, Ashley, Emily, Brandon, Brittney, Marissa, Emma, Camden, Kenny, Madison, Sheridan and Kylie; and seven great-grandchildren.

Also left to cherish his memory are seven sisters: Pearl Schnepf of Oyens, Iowa; Helen Saint Peter of Moville, Iowa; Rose Mary Wald of St. Cloud, Minn.; Theresa Bunts of Alton; Donna (Dennis) Ailts of Sioux City, Iowa; Charlene (Denny) Titus of Sioux City; and Lorraine (Bart) Marshall of Hawarden, Iowa. In addition, he is survived by six brothers: Richard (Virginia) Schwebach of Washburn, Iowa; Rodney (Marlys) Schwebach of Alton; Stephen (Lorna) Schwebach of Alton; Walter (Jo Ann) Schwebach of Alton; Leon (Nancy) Schwebach of Alton; and Larry (Patsy) Schwebach of Paullina.

Many nieces and nephews and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, David Schwebach and Marvin Schwebach; granddaughter, Jessica Thomas; and brother-in-law Donald Schnepf.
