No mandate; lives put at risk
Gov. Mike Parson tweeted that Missouri COVID cases and hospitalizations are down, which definitely is worth celebrating, but the rest of his message establishes a false equivalency.
A case of false equivalency involves giving equal weight to things that are not equal. An example would be to put a Holocaust victim on a stage across from a Holocaust denier to let them debate. But the Holocaust is a well-documented fact and denial is an intellectually bankrupt lie that does not deserve equal status in any discussion about the deaths of millions of the Jews, gypsies, gays and dissidents who stood against those fascist thugs who bent the knee to Hitler.
Parson’s false equivalency regarding COVID rests in the statement he made in tandem with fewer hospitalizations: “Missouri has no statewide mandates!” The absurd juxtaposition suggests that, without a mandate, everything worked out. It did not. With their health and lives on the line, Parson failed Missourians, a fact he cannot mask.
