A recent Facebook post from the Excelsior Springs Parks and Recreation and Community Center (ESPRCC) concerning poverty has sparked rage and hurt within some Excelsior Springs residents.The post was in regards to an upcoming poverty simulation event to be hosted by ESPRCC in partnership with the Community Action Agency of Greater Kansas City. The event, set for 2 p.m. Jan. 29, will take place at the Excelsior Springs Community Center.Participants will be assigned a persona that encompasses a name, gender, age, physical health status and financial situation. For instance, one might assume the role of an elderly individual with chronic asthma or a high school student who often misses class. The objective is to take participants out of their usual surroundings and engage them in a simulated alternate-life experience.The simulation will last one month and require approximately 2.5 hours of participation.
