Politics should play no role in combatting an acute respiratory syndrome, the virus that causes the deadly disease, COVID-19, but the lack of action in Missouri looks like politics, not leadership. Gov. Mike Parson in this election year has reacted slowly to the coronavirus in some instances and not at all in others. Daily press briefings provide tidbits of information, which is commendable and can be reassuring, but they are not enough. Doing nothing or the minimum after long delays no doubt suits the Greed and Fear Cabal, a group led by Jefferson City Republicans. The group rejects any regulation as “burdensome” and safety measures as infringing on privacy. Members have failed to make texting and driving a primary traffic offense. Cabal members have prevented this state from banning smoking in public places; cities brave enough to put health before perceived business profits have had to enact their own bans.
