Brewer, Burton fall in wrestlebacks at state tourney

COLUMBIA – Two Excelsior Springs wrestlers narrowly missed the medal round at the state girls wrestling tournament. Senior Jacey Brewer and Junior Vada Burton each went 2-2 and fell in the bubble round at the double-elimination tournament, held Feb. 17-19 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia. The top six places in each weight class received medals. Brewer opened the 125-pound weight class with a third-period win by fall over St. Genevieve’s Isabel Masler to advance to the winner’s-bracket quarterfinals. That round ended with a third-period loss by fall to eventual state champion Brenda Crahan of Nixa to put her in the consolation bracket. Brewer picked up a 6-4 win by decision over Platte County’s Elizabeth Humburg to move on to the bubble round, where she fell to Parkway South’s Nadia Middendorf.
