ES netters fall in dual districts, singles sectionals

Last week, the Excelsior Springs varsity tennis season ended. But not before a Tiger had reached sectionals in singles. That Tiger was Carter Pitts, who graduated May 12. Pitts reached sectionals by finishing second in individual districts. After drawing a first-round bye, Pitts won his quarterfinal match 6-0, 6-1 and his semifinal match 6-4, 6-4. He fell 6-0, 6-0 in the district finals to Justin Janasz of St. Pius X, a private school in Kansas City. Both Janasz and Pitts advanced to sectionals. Pitts faced Richmond’s Felix De Hesselle May 12 in sectionals at Maurice Roberts Park in Richmond. The match was originally scheduled for May 11, but it got postponed because of rain. De Hesselle, a German exchange student who had faced Pitts during the regular season, swept the best-of-three match 6-1, 6-0.
