Last week, Excelsior Springs boys tennis coach Richie Marsh and his Tigers got their first dual win this season.

Their second win, however, eluded them.

As The Standard reported April 19, the Tigers cruised past Richmond 9-0 April 15 at Maurice Roberts Park.

“We knew we were on the cusp of getting a win as a team,” Marsh said. “We have been getting better and we were all able to find a way to get wins to come out on top as a team.”

In doubles action, juniors Austin Collins and Theo Stuhrmann took the No. 1 match 8-1, senior Colt Bowman and junior Grayson Grove took the No. 2 match 8-5, and juniors Jack Dearing and Owen Peterson won 8-4.

The Tigers won four of their six singles matches by five games or more. Collins cruised 8-0 in the first position. Grove and Stuhrmann each won 8-1 . Bowman slugged out a 9-7 victory in the fourth sport. Dearing won the No. 5 match 8-3. Peterson completed the dual blowout by winning 8-4.

Excelsior Springs then fell 7-2 April 16 at home to William Chrisman, an Independence-based school. The Tigers’ two wins were in the No. 1 spots, with Collins and Stuhrmann nabbing No. 1 doubles 8-4 and Collins fighting his way to an 8-6 victory in No. 1 singles.

In other results, Grove and Bowman dropped the No. 2 doubles match 8-1. Dearing and Peterson fell 8-5. Grove fell in No. 2 singles 8-3. Stuhrmann fell 8-5 in the third spot. Bowman dropped the No. 4 match 8-4. Dearing and Peterson each fell 8-1.

The Tigers have four duals scheduled this week.
