Jamboree prompts Tigers to focus on attacking, ball distribution

An Aug. 20 preseason jamboree with visiting Kearney and Chillicothe gave the Tigers a phase of their game to hone as they prepare to open their varsity boys soccer season next week. Excelsior Springs scrimmaged Kearney and Chillicothe for 35 minutes each, finishing 1-1 with Kearney and then outscoring Chillicothe 3-1. “The improvement from game one to game two was a big thing we challenged them with,” coach Zac Ganzer said. “We were reliant on the other team to make mistakes in the first game, but took advantage of moving the ball side to side in the second game and were able to attack and spread the ball around and that will be our focus for next week.” In relying on Kearney to make mistakes, the Tigers allowed the Bulldogs to control the ball for much of that scrimmage. Excelsior Springs, however, staved off Kearney’s attack until the 26th minute, when the Bulldogs finished a header from 10 yards out.
