After losing starting quarterback Marquez McCant to an injury in Week 2 and struggling with ball security in Week 3, Excelsior Springs changed its offense, hoping to catch Kearney by surprise when the Missouri Highway 92 rivals met in Week 4 of the varsity 11-man football season. Kearney was not surprised. Or at least not for long. The Bulldogs shut out Excelsior Springs for the first half of the Sept. 15 Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference-Blue Division meeting at Tiger Stadium, leading 33-0 at halftime. The Tigers went on to fall 47-13, putting them at 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the Blue Division entering Friday’s divisional road meeting with Smithville. After receiving the opening kickoff, Excelsior Springs deployed a wildcatstyle offense, with two potential quarterbacks in the backfield, and moved the ball.
