Amigas dedicate championship performance to assistant coach’s wife battling cancer
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The girls on the Amigas FC soccer team played for more than a trophy when they competed Oct. 1-3 in the 12-and-under girls division at the Midwest All Girls Tournament in Johnson County, Kansas.
The squad of mostly Excelsior Springs residents dedicated the tournament to Heather Collins, wife of assistant coach Aaron Collins. Heather Collins had been diagnosed with “pretty aggressive cancer” shortly before the tournament, coach Cory Wartner said Oct. 6 by phone.
“Team Heather’s what we called it (tribute and awareness campaign),” Wartner said. “We did T-shirts. All the parents stepped up. We did Wonder Woman socks.”
Inspired by their cause, the Amigas won their division – their first tournament title, Wartner said. They posted back-to-back shutouts in their first two games, 4-0 and 14-0, he stated Oct. 4 via email. They then won 7-2 and closed with a shootout victory.
