Turnovers plague ES again; Tigers fall to Jays

Once again, Excelsior Springs struggled to hold onto the football. The Tigers lost three fumbles during their 34-12 Aug. 31 home varsity gridiron loss to Raytown. The turnovers followed four lost fumbles in their season-opening loss to Belton. The Tigers (0-2) put themselves in position to take advantage of a Raytown turnover, when junior Carson Jackson recovered a fumble. But then, senior running back Rhys Guthrie fumbled, setting up a 13-play Raytown scoring drive, capped by Ghustice Brownlee’s 5-yard TD run. Senior Jason Starchman blocked the extra-point attempt to keep the score at 6-0 Blue Jays. Excelsior Springs responded with an 11play, 74-yard drive to tie it. Sophomore Marquez McCant’s 3-yard TD run capped the drive. Raytown then staged a 12-play, 68yard scoring drive, capped by Micah Hall’s 21-yard TD pass to Larry Porter. Excelsior Springs threatened to answer on a possession that included a 46-yard run by McCant. But two plays after that run, the signal-caller suffered…
