Gregg Williams is coaching football again. Or soon will be. In June, ESPN and other media outlets reported the Excelsior Springs native, who last coached in 2020 in the NFL as defensive coordinator with the New York Jets, had agreed to be an assistant coach in the again-rebooted XFL. Williams confirmed the hiring July 8 during an interview at the Excelsior Springs Golf Course, where he helped to stage the annual auction and then the July 9 golf tournament for the Gregg Williams Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps area youth. Williams, however, couldn’t disclose his team assignment. “The XFL’s going to make all those announcements come August,” he said. One reason Williams took the job was because of his friendship with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, he said.
