2 sisters found dead east of Kearney

July 5, 2018 – Two young sisters, both under the age of 5, were found not breathing outside their home about 2 miles east of Kearney, near the intersection of Missouri Highway 92 and Cameron Road.

The children’s mother found her daughters unresponsive, and reportedly took them to a neighbor’s home for help, according to Capt. Will Akin, public information officer for the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, The Courier-Tribune reported. The neighbor then called 911. The girls died when paramedics arrived.

Foul play is not suspected, and the children were not found near water nor a roadway. At this time, there is no way to determine what caused their deaths, and it remains under investigation. The investigation itself is a priority, Akins told CBS News.

“We are going to treat this investigation with the utmost priority to try to get those answers, not only for everyone who is watching right now but also for the family. They need closure as well,” Akin said.

Neighbors of the family and investigators familiar with the case say the incident is a tragic situation, KCTV reported.

“I can only imagine what it is like for any parent to lose two children, let alone one, is nothing more than tragic,” Akin said.

Authorities are waiting for a medical examiner to determine the cause of death for both girls.

This is a developing story.
