The Excelsior Springs City Council looks different after Friday's special meeting swore in a new council member and selected a new mayor. Sharon Powell was chosen as mayor and Sonya Morgan as mayor pro-tem by the new city council which now includes Andrew Kowalski. The special meeting took place Friday, June 12 at 8:30 a.m. in the Hall of Waters council chambers with Powell and Kowalski taking their oath of office. Kowalski replaces Ambrose Buckman after winning the June 2 election. Mayor Powell made a proclamation honoring Buckman for his service on the council. In the proclamation, Powell noted that Buckman has served on the council since 2008, spending 10 of those years as mayor pro-tem and five as mayor. In addition to his role on the council, Buckman gives a lot of his time and devotion to many Excelsior Springs organizations such as St. Ann Catholic Church, the Good Samaritan Center, the Elks Lodge, the Knights of Columbus and so many boards and committees.
