City leaders explore options, such as urns, to address shrinking space at cemeteries
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Cityowned cemetery space is running out at Crown Hill and Hillcrest, City Manager Molly McGovern said during a meeting with other city leaders.
The city could develop a Crown Hill section to allow for shallow digging for urns versus graves, McGovern said.
Public records indicate a scrap heap occupied an area where the Crown Hill shed is located, Public Works Director Chad Birdsong said.
“We don’t know how far back it goes,” Birdsong said, adding there are plans to do “some spot digging and see where we run into stuff.”
An urn section at Hillcrest is under consideration, too, McGovern said.
McGovern said the city generates revenue from cemetery lot sales, selling 79 in 2020, up from the average of about 60 per year.
The city must maintain the grounds after all lots are full, McGovern said. The city is accumulating income from sales “for perpetual maintenance,” she said.
