In the Standard’s Friday, Nov. 3, 2023 edition “CID tax takes effect for ES westside” article – the new CID tax rate is 9.975%. Excelsior Springs Area Chamber of Commerce Director Brian Rice clarified the businesses listed do not currently have sales tax identification numbers because they don’t collect sales tax in their industry. Rice is double-checking the information with the state and said those businesses listed in last week’s article are not doing anything wrong, and he is finding out who will be collecting the sales tax and who will not be. “My emphasis over the next month is to check all retail businesses such as Walmart to make sure they are collecting the proper sales tax (9.975%). With these businesses over the next month or so, I’ll be ‘educating’ them to collect this new sales tax. If I feel businesses are ignoring it entirely, then I’ll start addressing it with the Department of Revenue,” he said.
