Clay County Sheriff offers free steering wheel locks
The Clay County Sheriff’s Department has partnered with local automotive companies to provide free steering wheel locks for select vehicles.
Some Kia and Hyundai vehicles sold in the U.S. do not have engine immobilizers, typically a standard feature that prevents the engine from starting unless the key is present. The sharp increase in thefts of these vehicles was fueled by a social media challenge.
With hopes of reducing local thefts, the sheriff said Clay County residents who are able to provide proof of ownership and residency can get a steering wheel lock free of charge.
The locks can be picked up from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday - Friday at the Clay County Conceal and Carry office at 27 S. Main St. in Liberty, Mo.
