In the March 24 edition of Excelsior Springs Standard, candidates for Excelsior Springs City Council were asked the following question. The correct responses are listed below: Reene – “Definitely public safety as deemed needed by ESPD and increased Education on the negative effects of drug use.” Rice – “The ballot pretty well states that the tax will be used to help offset the additional burdens placed on our first responders. Colorado being one of the first to legalize marijuana has seen in increase in traffic accidents, traffic deaths, ER visits, and hospitalizations. This tax is to be used to benefit our emergency services, and first responders.” St. John – “ The 3% tax on non-medical marijuana should be used for education efforts including SAFE programs, and fund first responders. Studies have shown locations with legalized use have required an increase in the services of police, fire, emergency, and mental health personnel.”
