Council agrees to implement license plate recognition camera system

The Excelsior Springs City Council agreed to implement a new license plate recognition camera system citywide as well as handle other city businesses at a routine meeting. The new automated license plate readers (ALRP), according to Police Chief Gregory Dull, serve a purpose between criminal activity and motor vehicles because license plates offer the police department objective evidence that can be used to gather actionable leads. “The information which can be obtained from license plates is quite valuable,” Dull said. “ALRP cameras can be used in real time to assist in identifying and intercepting stolen or wanted suspect vehicles as they drive past certain points in the city.” Dull explained that the technology being used will provide an extra set of eyes to a time-sensitive case and can aid in getting more violent offenders off the street.
