Council approves backyard chickens
The Excelsior Springs City Council has approved an ordinance to allow backyard chickens in certain situations.The updated ordinance received support from all council members, with the exception of Councilman John McGovern.The ordinance allows the keeping of backyard chickens on properties with a single-family detached dwelling that is equal to or larger than 8,712 square feet.Specific regulations include:• For lots between 8,712 square feet and 21,344 square feet, the maximum number of chickens allowed is three.• For lots between 21,780 square feet (0.50 acre) and 43,124 square feet, the maximum number of chickens allowed is six.• For lots between 1 acre and 2.99 acres, the maximum number of chickens allowed is 12.• For lots larger than 3 acres, the maximum number of chickens allowed is 12.• No enclosure may be situated in the front or side yard.
