Council approves initial reading to accept updated building codes
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The City Council took a step toward adopting the most recent International Code Council building codes Sept. 7 at the Hall of Waters.
The council approved an initial reading of an ordinance to adopt the 2018 codes. Generally, the ICC updates triennially, with new codes set for release in January, Economic Development Director Melinda Mehaffy said.
Following the council’s vote, there will be a 90-day period to permit “probable contractors and builders an opportunity to come in and look at the codes and to discuss with us the codes – to see if there are any other changes they would like to consider,” Mehaffy told city leaders.
Mehaffy recommended approving the ordinance to help the city stay up on current codes. As she stated in a Sept. 2 memo to city leaders and reiterated before the council voted, Excelsior Springs is using codes the ICC approved nine years ago.
