Council OKs more CARES Act funding for community groups

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Three Excelsior Springs nonprofit organizations have been awarded Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act funding. The City Council approved grants to the Slightly Off Broadway Theatre, Excelsior Springs Museum and Alcoholics Anonymous in town. The council previously approved $75,000 from CARES Act funding to support the Excelsior Springs Chamber of Commerce and $70,000 for the Downtown Excelsior Springs Partnership in September. The theater received a $16,650 grant. In a memo to the council and Mayor Sharon Powell the week before the vote, Economic Development Director Melinda Mehaffy stated the money would cover COVID-19 losses for three plays: “The Odd Couple,” $2,600; “Beauty and the Beast,” $10,800; and “Whatever Happened to Baby Joan Crawford,” $3,250. The museum received a $12,590 grant – $11,266 to cover losses incurred from the inability to stage fundraisers and $1,324 to compensate for lost admission, per Mehaffy’s memo. Alcoholics Anonymous…
