EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Benjamin Chase, 21, Excelsior Springs, died while in custody and the death is being reviewed by another law enforcement agency, the Clay County Investigative Squad, Excelsior Springs Police Chief Gregory Dull stated. Dull said he asked for the outside investigation “for transparency and accountability” to the public. Many departments ask for outside reviews of unusual circumstances for the same reasons, he said. “They’ll determine exactly what happened,” Dull said. Neither foul play nor suicide are suspected at this time based on how Chase appeared when discovered in the jail cell, he said. A regular cell check resulted in Chase being discovered in an unresponsive state at 4:13 p.m. Sunday, May 8. At 4:19 p.m., an emergency medical service provider pronounced him dead. “There were no obvious signs of foul play,” Dull stated. Police arrested Chase one day before his death on an Excelsior Springs warrant for failure to appear, with a bond of $1,500, and on a Clay County warrant for unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a defaced firearm, with a bond of $50,000. At the time of his arrest, emergency medical service personnel evaluated Chase. He refused medical attention but acknowledged use of methamphetamine.
