Court makes state pay for voter-approved Medicaid expansion
JEFFERSON CITY – After Missouri’s GOP-dominated General Assembly and Gov. Mike Parson refused to honor voter-approved Medicaid expansion, court rulings required funding; and now, the Missouri Department of Social Services will comply.
The Missouri Supreme Court ruled for voters, sending the issue back to Cole County Circuit Judge Jon Beetem, who said the law must be followed immediately. A major backer of the ballot issue, Healthcare for Missouri, urged quick action to do as the court had ordered.
“Particularly at a time when the state is seeing an alarming increase in COVID cases and deaths, access to health care is lifesaving, vital and past due, considering funding is already available,” the group advised. “Missourians across the state will finally be able to realize the health and economic benefits of Medicaid expansion.”
