COVID-19 threatens city’s budget; fire, police set to take 10% pay cuts

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Social distancing rules that closed many of the city’s businesses also squeezed the faucet on city revenue, leading City Manager Molly McGovern to reduce the flow of city spending. The fire and police departments are among places where spending will be cut until there is clarity regarding how deeply safety measures to curb the coronavirus, COVID-19, have sliced into the city’s revenue vein, McGovern said. “We are like everybody else. We’re not immune to the financial effects of COVID,” she said. “We are developing a financial plan to help ensure our city sustains our delivery services.” McGovern said she heard from the departments before making a final decision on how much to cut. “I got feedback from police and fire that they shouldn’t be included in that reduction,” she said.
