RICHMOND – The idea some in Washington floated – that COVID-19 would disappear after the presidential election – has proved false nationally and in Clay and Ray counties. Including most of the northern part of Kansas City, Clay County in the past week has recorded another 15 deaths. Clay County has a quarter million residents. Rural Ray County, population 20,000, added 122 more cases and announced the county’s fourth death: “The (deceased) resident was a male over the age of 65 who tested positive for COVID-19 in early November.” The Ray County Health Department did not say whether the man’s death took place in Richmond, a different community or in a rural area. As of Nov. 29, 23 Ray Countians have had to be hospitalized and there are 52 active cases. After various closings due to the virus, all schools in Ray County and Excelsior Springs reopened after Thanksgiving.
