ES community discusses Wyman School’s future

Excelsior Springs community members recently gathered at the Hall of Waters to discuss the future of Wyman School. Economic Development Director Melinda Mehaffy led the meeting attended by many locals and city council members, with the purpose of hearing citizens’ thoughts on what should be done with the former school. The City of Excelsior Springs acquired Wyman School in April of 2017. It was taken into possession due to the amount of vandalism and break-ins occurring. “Our goal is to see the building reused simply because we pay to mow it and pay to reboard it after a break-in is attempted, which is costly,” said Mehaffy. “We have acquired a State Environmental Improvement and Energy Resource Authority (EIERA) Grant, and the city is starting to look down the road to see what we can do to take better care of the property.” Mehaffy explained that in 2021, a phase one environmental study was completed through a fully paid grant.
