ES community legend honored with highway dedication

A recent initiative came to pass in Excelsior Springs as a portion of U.S. 69 Highway was renamed in honor of Vic Bonuchi for his career accomplishments coaching high school baseball, football and wrestling, as well as his contributions to the athletes and people in the community he affected. During the ribbon cutting and appreciation ceremony, high school coach and former Excelsior Springs athlete Sam Brown said that Bonuchi’s career began in 1960 as an assistant coach after departing from William Jewell College as an athlete. From 1963 to 1968, Brown said, the Excelsior Springs football team won 43 consecutive games under Bonuchi’s guidance. Once Bonuchi handed over the reins to Brown, he began coaching the Excelsior Springs high school wrestling team, bringing home the state championship trophy in 1974 and 1975.
