ESPD gets approval for new jail cameras
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The Excelsior Springs Police Department is getting new video cameras to monitor activity in its jail cells.
On June 6 at the Hall of Waters, the City Council approved Chief Greg Dull’s request to have cameras installed in six adult cells and the cell for juveniles. The total is an increase from the department’s current total, three, Dull stated in a May 26 memo to city leaders.
Per the chief’s memo, Electronic Technology Inc. of Merriam, Kansas, will handle the project for $18,361.76. He asked that funding the city had received through the American Rescue Plan Act be used to finance the project.
Approval of the cameras comes about a month after the death of 21-year-old area resident Benjamin Chase in his cell. As this newspaper reported, Dull requested an investigation of the death by the Clay County Investigative Squad and that “no obvious signs of foul play” were apparent....
