EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – A new first day of school for students won the Excelsior Springs Board of Education’s approval at Monday’s special meeting.

The target date for reopening is Sept. 8.

Student attendance guidelines provided by the district for each grade level are...

• Pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students will attend school face-to-face daily, beginning Sept 8.

• Students in grades 6-12 will attend school using a “hybrid schedule.” The schedule consists of students placed in two groups: A and B. “Group A” students will attend school in person on Mondays and Thursdays. “Group B” students will attend in person on Tuesdays and Fridays. Students in both groups will participate via “virtual attendance” every Wednesday. The other two days will involve students following directed learning instructions.

“They will have the opportunity for virtual teaching on the days they’re not there in person,” Superintendent Dan Hoehn said Tuesday. “They will have five days of contact, but only two in person – one full day virtual, and the others will be different kinds of contact.”

• Grades 9-12 students at the Excelsior Springs Career Center will meet face-to-face daily.

After meeting last week with area school district administrators at North Kansas City High School, Gov. Mike Parson said he would not oppose school districts waiting until after Labor Day to reopen.

Missouri has been plagued by growing coronavirusrelated cases and deaths. The number of cases Wednesday topped 54,000, up from about 45,000 a week earlier; and the number of deaths has reached 1,317 – up by 310, or 23.5%, from one week earlier.

The school district stated the change in the starting date came in response to recommendations and guidelines from the Clay County Health Department and recent area COVID-19 cases.

“Our District Re-Opening Task Force is aligned with the Clay County Health Department and Childrens Mercy Hospital recommendations,” district information states.
