Excelsior Springs considers tweaking cemetery decoration regs

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The city may change grave-decorating rules at Crown Hill and Hillcrest cemeteries. On Nov. 11, City Manager Molly McGovern sent a memo to city leaders recommending the city allow groundskeeping personnel to regularly remove decorations March 1-Oct. 31, defined as “the growing season,” to keep the grass cut. But decorations would be exempt from removal over the Easter, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day and Father’s Day holidays. The current regulation, which limits decoration cleanup to “two specific” weeks, puts the city in jeopardy of offending families by taking the decorations unannounced or prompting complaints of disregard for the grounds by not taking them, McGovern stated. To further address the issue, the city requests “all decorations are limited to what can be placed on the monument only, except for one week” after the four holiday periods, the memo stated.
