Excelsior Springs district OKs math service for schools

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The school district has another new math service. On May 10, the Board of Education approved an agreement with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to provide Into Math services for grades K-5, effective the 2021-22 school year and priced at $112,043. The approval follows the board’s vote in April to accept an agreement with Desmos Inc. to provide math services for grades 6-8. Assistant Superintendent Aerin O’Dell attributed the gap between presenting the K-5 and 6-8 agreements primarily to inclement winter weather. “Our pilot (program) got behind when we missed, like, the month of February, I think,” O’Dell told district leaders. “So we wanted to make sure we gave all the elementary teachers enough time to complete the pilot.” It also was important to give the pilot teachers time to talk with non-pilot teachers and not rely solely on pilot teachers’ feedback, O’Dell said.
