OMAHA, Nebraska – Kent McGuire, safety and health coordinator at The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Science, said falls are often caused by slips or trips. These falls can be especially dangerous for older people, resulting frequently in breaks, including to hips. In 20% of all falls, injuries occur to more than one area of the body. “Sprains, strains, bruises, fractures and concussions are the most common types of injuries incurred by a fall,” McGuire said. Triggers for falls in rural areas include loose gravel, loose hay, muddy conditions and manure in feedlots. “You don’t have to fall a long way to sustain severe injuries,” McGuire said. “It can be as little as 4 or 6 feet.” Changing weather conditions, especially snowy and/or icy conditions, can trigger a fall. “Some key ways to prevent slips, trips and falls in either wet weather or cold and icy conditions include use of adequate footwear,” McGuire said. “That should include good tread to…
